Workshop:

Tired of waiting? - an introduction to statistics for time to event data

Koldkærgård Konferencecenter, 21-22 October 2004

Introduction

In many biological studies, data consists of durations from some start time until some event occurs. In human and veterinary medicine, for example, one may observe the survival time from a subject has received some treatment until the subject dies. In behavioral studies in agricultural science, one often observes the time from a domestic animal has received some stimulus until it responds with a given type of action. Apart from biology, duration data occurs in industry in durability tests of manufactured products.

Times to event or waiting times are by definition positive and often display a skewed distribution. Another common feature of time to event data is that the observations may be truncated: referring to the above examples, one may need to terminate a study before all subjects have died or all animals have responded. Due to the special features of time to event data, specialized statistical methods are required.

The aim of the workshop is to give an introduction to statistical methods for time to event data, with an emphasis on modelling and applications. The lectures and case studies will be accompanied with computer exercises where the participants will get a hands on experience with the methodology. The computer exercises will be based on the free statistical software R.

The workshop is aiming at Ph.D. students in the agricultural and biological sciences and Ph.D.-students with a background in mathematics, computer science or engineering, who are interested in learning more about the applications in the biological sciences.

The DINA Research School is part of a Nordic cooperation. The workshop language will be English unless all participants have Danish as the first language.

We are looking forward to seeing you at Koldkærgård Landboskole.
